Take the Scenic Route!
No matter what part of the island you’re coming from, we encourage you to take the Scenic Route (Old Mamalahoa Rd).
Sometimes, GPS will misdirect you down a dirt road (Old Onomea Rd.) While this route will get you here, it is not recommended since the Scenic Route is easier (and prettier too)!
From Route 19, we are 15 min North of Hilo.
Take Route 19 along the Hamakua Coast and look for the blue Scenic Drive sign between mile markers 10 and 11. On the makai (ocean) side of the highway, turn onto Kulaimano Road. From Kulaimano, take a right onto Old Mamalahoa Rd, known as the Scenic Route. Our Visitor Center is about 1.5 miles on the right.
All Guests must be able to safely navigate the boardwalk on their own. Mobility assistance devices such as wheelchairs, scooters, or crutches are not permitted.
The Boardwalk entry to the Garden is quite steep, with an elevation change of about 100′ over 500′ in length. Please know your physical limitations before you enter.
Strollers must be unoccupied when used on the Boardwalk. Once past this portion, our paths are paved and accessible.
The trail is approximately 1.25 miles long with a combination of both uphill and downhill sections. Don’t forget to wear comfy shoes.
Most guests take between 1-1.5 hours in the garden but your ticket allows you access for the entire day. We encourage you to take your time.
No, pets are not permitted in the Garden.

The Garden and Visitors Center is 20 acres however the entire area of the Garden is now 100 acres (and growing).

We are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas (Dec 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan 1).
With over 2500 plant species, there’s always something beautiful in-bloom at HTBG. While many flowers blossom in Spring and Summer, Winter brings beautiful rain which makes for exciting waterfalls and stream views.
We have roughly 125,000 visitors annually.
Yes, you can ask at our Visitor Center or call Guest Services at 808-964-5233 to ask about lost items.
We are not affiliated with any other Gardens or Parks. HTBG is a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
At Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, we encourage guests to capture their visit using handheld photography.
-Please be considerate of other guests and follow all posted garden policy.
-Avoid blocking paths or monopolizing one area for too long. Photography must be conducted without disrupting guests or staff.
-Drones and live broadcast are not permitted.
-Videos and photographs must be for personal, non-commercial use.
-The commercial use of any photos or video taken on our grounds is prohibited without the express permission of Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. If you are interested in Commercial Photography, please contact us at guestservices@htbg.com.
-HTBG reserves the right to intervene if a photographer is found violating any of our policies. They may be asked to end their session if steps are not taken to comply.
